Cultural Research Consultancy for Brands and Institutions

Authentic design starts with understanding. The Ninevites offers cultural research consultancy that helps brands, institutions and creative teams engage with African heritage, symbolism and identity respectfully and meaningfully, so the work you put into the world is grounded in real knowledge, not stereotype.

Sankara Rugs- The Ninevites

How we help

  • Heritage and symbolism research. Understanding the meaning, origin and context of patterns, colours, materials and rituals.
  • Cultural insight for product development. Grounding new products and collections in authentic references.
  • Campaign and content consultancy. Helping brands tell African stories with accuracy and respect.
  • Community and craft engagement. Connecting projects with artisans, makers and knowledge holders.

Research that becomes design

Our own work shows how research becomes product. The Sankara rug drew on the beadwork and dress of the Zulu Reed Dance and went on to win Design Indaba’s Most Beautiful Object in South Africa award. We bring the same approach to client projects, from brand collaborations to exhibitions and public programmes.

The Ninevites prioritises Global South voices and works with partners including Penguin Random House UK, Rand Merchant Investment, Trenery and the Nordic Culture Fund.
